"Sir John Holcombe, son of Walter, was born about 1320 (Another report says 1298). He married Isabel Downe (see preceeding page). By this marriage the Holcombes became possessed of considerable estates, part of the ancient inheritance of Downe Ralph, as well as that of the older and nobler house of De la Bruer. These estates remained in the family until about 1600..."
