After victorious campaigns against the barbarian Polabs in 1030, he attacked the German King Conrad II, who, in alliance with the RussianGrand Prince Yaroslav of Kiev, attacked Poland (1031), further supported by rebellions within the country. Eventually, about 1033, Mieszko was forced to recognize German supremacy. His death in 1034 thus came at the height of a crisis. The boomin foreign trade that had been a factor in the establishment of the Piast empire had come to a close; the regional overlords were in a state of rebellion , and the barbarian insurrections deeply affected the barely established organization ofthe church..."
