Marietta "Daily Leader" 7 Jul 1897
Mrs Seldon Cole delighted a few hearers on the afternoon of the Fourth with a patriotic address. He spoke from a box under a cherry tree on Charley Buchanan's lawn. The orator gave a historic review of Independence Day, regretted that the old time method of observing the day had fallen into disuse, apologized for it on the ground that the people were better informed than formerly and preferred to sit at home and read the accounts in the papers. He believed the people were as patriotic as ever. He paid a high tribute to the Revolutionary fathers, and closed with an elegant peroration prophetic of the ultimate triumph of Republicanism throughout the world. Mr Cole is a member of the Freshman Class of Marietta College. He has the elements of an orator and deserves praise for his unique and thoughtful address.
