BOOKS
The New Columbia Encyclopedia 1975 p276 Berengar II: "Died 966, Marquis of Ivrea. In 950 he made himself and his son joint kings of Italy, but his great unpopularity andhis attempt to force Adelaide, his predecessor's widow, to marry his son brought the intervention (951) of Otto I of Germany. Berengar swore fealty to Otto in 952. Later he ravaged Italy and intrigued with Pope John XII against Otto, who captured and imprisoned Berengar in 963."

Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1981, Micropaedia, Vol I, p993, Berengar II Marchese D'Ivrea, Born Abt 900, Died 966, also styled king of Italy from 950 to 952, played an important part in the career of the German King and Holy Roman Emperor Otto I the Great. For several months in 951 he held captive Adelaide, daughter and widow of kings of Italy; she escaped from him and married Otto, who assumed the title of King of the Lombards and made Berengar hisvassal. Later (from 960) Berengar and his son Adalbert attacked Pope John XII, on whose appeal Otto marched into Rome and was crowned emperor (962). John's subsequent negotiations with Berengar caused Otto to depose the Pope and to imprison Berengar in Germany (963)."

Macropaedia, Vol IX, p1125, Italy History of: "Upon the death of Lothair II, son of Hugh of Provence (950), Berengar II of Ivrea, who, with his son, Adalbert, already held virtual power, was crowned king. But an opposition, headed by a courageous woman, Adelaide, daughter of Rudolph of Burgundy and widow of Lothair, called for help from Otto I of Germany. Otto, whom Berengar, when an exile in Germany, had already asked to intervene in Italian struggles forpower, came to Italy (951), donned the royal crown at Pavia, and married Adelaide. Soon after, by a compromise, Berengar and Adalbert regained rule over Italy, though as vassals of the German King. But the marches of Verona, Friuli, Trent, andinland Istria (all lying across northeast Italy) were given toHenry, Duke of Bavaria, to ensure the German King's access to Italy. Some years later, Berengar faced further opposition, and Pope John XII asked Otto to intervene. Otto returned and, in 962, was crowned, together with Adelaide, in Rome. Berengar was soon captured and deported to Germany..."
