Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1981, Micropaedia, Vol VIII, p708, Rudolf: "He was at first not recognized by many of the magnates; in addition, his brother-in-law Herbert, count of Vermandois, after capturing Rudolf's rival, Charles the Simple, extorted from Rudolf (928) the county of Leon by threatening to release Charles...Eventually, only Herbert of Vermandois refused to acknowledge him king, and against him Rudolf waged a ruthless war, burning his strongholds and finally besieging him (933-934) in Chateau-Thierry. The King had just forced his foe's capitulation when he fell ill and died."
