INTERNET beddows@btinternet.com I happened upon your website and saw information on Elystan Glodrydd, and noted that you welcomed any new information. I am currently writing a history of my family and have researched quite a lot about Elystan and his family. I am a direct descendant of his and come from the Shropshire/Wales borders. "Glodrydd" was not another name for him but a nick-name of sorts. The word means something like "Renowned (or as other record: praiseworthy)" - so he was Elystan the Renowned rather like Alfred was "the Great" or Ethelred "the Unready". He was not born in 933, as some records say, but circa 970/975. The 933 date came from an inaccurate source which also claimed he was Earl of Hereford - he was also not a godson of King Athelstan (the dates just don't match up). Cefn Digoll is "Long Mountain" on the Shropshire- Montgomeryshire border, near Welshpool. Hope that helps. I'm descended from Ieuaf ap Cadwgan ab Elystan. Ieuaf was said to have been Cadwgan's fourth son. "ap" is normally used for "son of" (as in Mac), but "ab" is used before a vowel, hence ab Elystan. It is also usually lower case. Hope that helps - I have myself been corrected on much of what I found early on. Its always good to see something of Elystan's tribe on the net !! Kind regards Philip Beddows
